I have been the Member for Wakefield in the Australian House of Representatives since November 2007.
I am currently the Shadow Assistant Minister for Manufacturing and Science. I believe a strong manufacturing industry remains critical to the future prosperity of Australia.
I have previously served as the Shadow Parliamentary Secretary of Health and was involved in health workforce, palliative care and hearing policies.
Born in Elizabeth, South Australia, I was educated at the University of South Australia, completing a Bachelor of Arts at the Salisbury campus. Before winning the seat of Wakefield I was a cleaner, salesman and trolley collector.
In 1994 I joined the Shop Distributive and Allied Employees’ Association and was later employed as an official. While employed at the union, I was an organiser, training officer and occupational health and safety officer.
I was the President of the South Australian branch of the ALP in 2005-6 and I have completed a Graduate Diploma in Communication from the University of South Australia.
